Caroline & Kelly in Chelsea

Caroline, Kelly, and I hang at the Maritime Hotel's "Maritime Cabana" in Chelsea last Sunday night. They are visiting from Los Angeles and were very impressed by the Cabana Party.

Crêpes with Ilana

Ilana and I saw a film at the "Rendezvous With Madness" Film Festival tonight with Ankur and Marcos and we also had dinner with them afterwards. This was her first time meeting Marcos and her first time meeting Ankur since we first met her at the Jem Convention a couple of months ago. After they leave we go for dessert at Café Crêpe on Queen West and I get the scoop on what she thought of them.

2 Idiots in the Parking Lot

The MAN is lost, what else is new?

Ankur seems to be a very popular guy @ this Wedding Anniversary party we were at. It makes me feel I'm Guy Ritchie to him being Madonna. I let out my frustration by yelling on him in the parking lot.

2 Idiots Getting Married?

No way, not us!

We're at the 30th Anniversary Party of our friend Josie's parents, Nella & Mario Spitale. What a lovely evening of food, drinks, desserts, music - and celebration of love. Josie did an outstanding job of organizing everything.

Elevator Cam

Apparently people in the Hotel didn't know that the Jem Convention 2009 was happening. Some people didn't seem too enthusiastic to see us dressed in costume.

The Stingers & the Yellow Corvette

I ran into "The Stingers" in the parking lot. 2 hot blondes with a hot car; however they refused to give me a ride. I think I know WHY. Watch and find out.

Kimber Wants to Join "The Stingers" Group

Kimber is not happy being in her sister's group (Jem and the Holograms).

She talks to "The Stingers" (Jem's rival) about joining their group.

Marsha Wants 2 Jobs

Marsha is a Geo-Political Analyst in real life. Now she wants a job as a "Jem and the Holograms World" analyst.

Marsha Fumes Over Hume

"Hume" refers to Desmond Hume, one of the main characters on LOST. I made the mistake of telling Marsha just how attractive I thought he was. Then she threatened my life.

Adam's "Jimmy" Performance

Adam does his version of M.I.A's "Jimmy". I loved it. Makes me laugh everytime I watch it!

Bike Pirates in Toronto

About 2 months ago I started riding my bike to work primarily to get exercise, save money, arrive FAST, and to be more mobile and happy (FREE parking anywhere! And I'm the boss - I come and go as I want - not according to the bus frequency, etc.

Nothing works my nerve more than waiting endlessly for busses, streetcars, or subways - or worse: Toronto's transit system not being 24 hours, and having to be up close to people who smell, who are loud, and who have no manners. It gets me into a really bad mood. Now, I cycle everywhere...I carry a face cloth to dry off, an extra tshirt to change into, deodrant, and perfume - and yes, at the end of a trip I DO look and smell better than alot of transit riders.

My friend AJ is a big time cyclist. It was only last month that she did the "'Friends for Life' Aids Rally" where her and the fellow cyclists rode from Toronto - Montreal. She described it as an incredible experience! They collected pledges for the cause and all monies raised went to People with Aids Foundation. There were training rides, social events, fundraising parties, camping, bonding with team mates, and above all else: making new friends! She's trying to convince me to participate next year...If you want more information about it (the experience, the journey, the bike route, the logistics, how to get involved next year, then please write back. I will find your answers.)

My other friend Marcos is a daily cyclist like me and he needed some repairs done to his bike. AJ suggested
"BIKE PIRATES" which is on Bloor St (at Lansdowne). It was Marcos' and I first time there and we were really blown away by this establishment. http://bikepirates.com/

First of all, you cannot hire these guys and gals to repair your bike.
The shop (big space) is set up like a 'do it yourself' body shop. There are individual stations which are in fact poles with vices so that you can hoist your bike up and lock it into place so that YOU (yes, you) can work on it.

Bike Pirates is an all run volunteer based establishment. They (the pirates?) float around the shop asking you what problems your bike has and will teach you how to fix it. Their shop is fully loaded with tools, parts (new and used which you can purchase), nuts, bolts, screws, etc...and you work on your bike yourself under their guidance. I am not inclined to be a Ms Fixit or use tools to repair things, so I was just standing around trying to look good for all the hardworking guys and gals. I went to Bike Pirates because I was trying to find a new splash guard for the back of my bike. Marcos needed his front brakes replaced and under a pirate's guidance, Marcos did it himself! The cost? You donate whatever you deem fit for the pirate's guidance & time, and the shop's space. You drop your donation in a big bucket at the front door. Now Marcos has the pirate bug and wants to be a volunteer. He has no prior bike experience - and that's OKAY!!
First he will go there as an observer and trainee....to watch and learn what and how the pirates do it. Then he would like to hang out as a weekly volunteer. And you can too if you have an interest in bike repairs, etc. No experience necessary, only enthuasiam.

More about Bike Pirates:

- they accept all donations and will take your old bikes, chains, handlebars, helmets, tools, screws, bolts, bells, pedals - anything that you can spare! (call me if you're busy, I'll bike over and collect it and bring it to the shop)

- they are very grassroots and community oriented. They have fundraisers for the shop (bike washes, etc) whereby you can come with your dirty bike, they will wash it (perhaps lube and tighten) and you donate money to the shop

- the Pirates offer a wealth of knowledge not only on how to teach you to repair, but they are also tapped manny manny other Toronto bike resourses. This is a great way to expand your circle and meet more people with similar interests as yourself..all for free!

- Bike Pirates (a DIY - do it yourself shop) does not only exist in Toronto, they are in San Francisco and perhaps even in your city!

- Bike Pirates will gladly accept any donations you have to offer. Cash, parts, old bikes, accessories, etc

- Bike Pirates are always looking for more volunteers: Those experienced in mechanics, or those wanting to learn more about bicycles, or those wanting to contribute an any other way...answering phones? greeting those at the door and helping them get settled? helping to organize and tidy up the shop?, etc...

Please write me back if you have any parts or tools or accessories (helmets, lights, reflectors, seats, etc) to donate to Bike Pirates.

Here's a picture of Marcos working on his bike at Bike Pirates.

The second picture is at our friend Ankur's apartment. It was taco night and after Bike Pirates Marcos and I cycled over with a 12 pack of cold Corona in our messenger bags (we drank responsibility since we each had to bike home).
Notice how we crossed our bottles like Pirates ;-)

Street Art in "The Mission" in San Francisco

The Street Art was one of my favourite things in San Francisco.  I liked that alot of the murals had themes of social justice and activism.  Most of these shots were taken in "Clarion Alley" in "The Mission" area of San Francisco.

California Sea Lions @ Pier 39 in San Francisco

California Sea Lions use Pier 39 in San Francisco to rest.  They frequent the Bay area because there is plenty of food nearby.  The docks are protected from storm waves and predators like Great White Sharks do not come into the Bay.

Yoshi's Jazz Club on Fillmore Street, San Francisco

The famous Fillmore Jazz Festival was happening the same week I was in town.  Susan took me to Yoshi's Jazz Club where you can eat Japanese food and listen to Jazz music.  It is very unique and very stylish inside.  There is a dinner/performance area where you can sit and eat and listen to live music.  There is also a more club-like area and a casual dining area.  I like that the kitchen is right up to the front.

4th of July BBQ w/Toisha & Susan

I went with these girls to a 4th of July rooftop patio BBQ.  We met up with some smart, funny, charming, progressive people.  Good eats and drinks - what's not to like?  Oh, we also had a stunning view of the hills.

Introducing Susan and The Hills of San Francisco

Susan is one of my very first and very best friends that I met in New York a few months after I moved there.  She now lives in San Francisco and I am there visiting her.  We didn't have hills like this in New York.  They are exhausting.  I ask her to comment on it.

Deborah Cox Electrifies Audiences @ Pride Toronto

Our homegrown girl, Deborah Cox, lights up the Saturday night Pride Toronto stage with a FREE LIVE performance.  She's a sexy diva with an amazing set of pipes who knows how to sing and dance and work the crowd.  Her set was awesome!

Garth aka "Anne Tenna"

Garth has taken his passion for TV Reception and created a character called "Anne Tenna" whom he'll be dressed as and marching in Toronto's Pride Parade on Sunday.  His other passions and drag characters in the past include Madonna (Man-donna), Lucy, Wonder Woman).

A quote from Garth's blog:
Ever since I was a kid, I loved antennas and TV reception. It was always a thrill to hook up an antenna and see what stations I could get, and see if I could pick up anything from a far distance. With the transition to digital broadcasting happening, my love for OTA (over the air) reception came back and this blog will focus on what channels I'm able to receive via antenna from my home just outside of Toronto, Canada.  http://tvgarth.blogspot.com/

2 Idiots Getting Excited for Deborah Cox

Remembering the Mermaid Parade @ Coney Island, Brooklyn

i attended the mermaid parade in june 2007 when i lived in new york.  unfortunately it no longer exists.  it was one of the most unique festivals i ever attended with the most unique vibe - it was so much fun! here is an article i wrote last year for traveljournalnetwork.com

(originally posted FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2008)

Part Mardi Gras, part Art Parade, part Carnival - the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island is not to be missed!

NEW YORK - One of my most memorable and favourite events to hit when I was living in New York was the Mermaid Parade. It is one of the greatest summer events in Brooklyn. Regrettably of my four years living in New York, it was only in my last year that I attended it.

The Mermaid Parade, which originated in New York in 1983 is an event that is distinctly a product of New York and is only celebrated in New York.

The parade usually begins at 2pm down on Surf Avenue and attracts a couple thousand participants who march, or walk, or dance in the parade either on floats, in marching bands or in groups.  The entire Surf Avenue rapidly becomes packed with hundreds of thousands of spectators all waiting for the fun to start.

The event itself is part Mardi Gras, part Carnival, part Halloween, and part art parade.  The parade exists to celebrate and welcome the beginning of the summer season and to mark the official opening of the Atlantic Ocean.  The parade takes place down in Coney Island, which is located at the most southern point of Brooklyn where land meets ocean.  It is customary for people to go to the boardwalk and throw fruit into the water to appease the Sea God, Poseidon.

Many parade spectators also dress up in extraordinary marine costumes ranging from mermaids, mermen, sea captains, sea creatures, sea monsters, etc.  The weather is so hot this time of year that most of the costumes appear in the form of  colourful and elaborate make-up and body paint.  Accessories are also thoughtful, colourful, and creative: netted costumes, masks, shiny glittery body suits, jewelry and beads; bright and bold body paint meticulously painted on faces, arms, chests and entire bodies.  Costumes are anything and everything that represent Sea Life, both living and dead.  Costumes, colour, and creativity are so outstanding and brilliant that this event is one of most popular events for photographers to shoot.

After the parade there is so much to still see and do!  The day is far from over.  Coney Island is really an exciting place to be.  It is full of life and full of people with great energy!

On a gorgeous summer day the entire area is packed.  You can go to the beach and swim in the Atlantic Ocean.  You can check out the boardwalk, the shops, the bars, or get something to eat on a patio.  There is also the Coney Island amusement park, “Astroland”, which is right beside the boardwalk.  Check out the Cyclone roller coaster, or the Wonder Wheel (as I did last year - fun times!).  There are haunted houses, fun houses, games where you can win prizes, bumper cars, shops, carnival food to eat, and “Nathan’s Famous” original hot dog stand which opened on Coney Island in 1916 which has become a landmark.

Between the years of about 1880 and WWII, Coney Island was the largest amusement areas in the US, attracting several million visitors per year.  Today it remains as the home of the Mermaid Parade, and in my opinion one of the most fun(!!) places to hang out where you can lay on the beach, go swimming, eat outdoors on a patio, and take in some amusement rides…all under the sun next to the water!  This is my heaven and my idea of a great day!

And all for one subway ride away from Manhattan!

Getting there:

D, F, N, Q trains to Stillwell station.

Ankur and the boys and I have a drink at "Spirits".  This bar is haunted and has all sorts of furniture on the ceilings such as chairs, baby baskets, skis, boomerangs, road signs, etc.  Spooky!

It was also the weekend of Emma's birthday, so we gave her a shout out in the video!  Emma, we miss you!!

California Sandwiches

Located in Toronto's Little Italy, California Sandwiches make Subway and the rest of chains look like a joke.

This restaurant is family owned and operated since 1967.
It's best not to go there during peak hours on a weekend.  You'll have a very long wait.  I've been eating their veal sandwiches for years and tonight the boys try their steak sandwiches for the first time.  The sandwiches are very reasonably priced at under 8 bucks a pop, and you WILL be full and happy afterwards.
